Swingers—The Art of Mini Golf was a playable art exhibition, part of RISING 2025.
Role | Creative Direction, Content Strategy, Merchandise, Documentation
The exhibition transformed Flinders Street Station’s upper levels, including the Ballroom, into a surreal, 9-hole mini-golf course. Drawing on the game’s feminist origins, each hole was an artwork created by female artist, including Miranda July, Kaylene Whiskey, Pat Brassington, Soda Jerk and more. The exhibition has gone on to tour Brisbane at Brisbane Powerhouse in January 2026.
The Swingers sub-brand had to communicate at a glance that the show wasn’t just mini-golf, but an art exhibition first. The title of the exhibition also presented challenges, and so required specific and consistent styling within communications.
Brand Design
Callum McGregor, RISING’s lead designer at the time, concepted the brand visuals, exploring a modern update on traditional golf clubhouse crests with ’80s punk aesthetics and Riot Grrl references. The typography was RISING’s Portrait and Sohne Mono Buch fonts to retain connection to the master brand. Sam West, RISING’s copywriter, developed the tagline and copy. The Swingers sub-brand was applied to campaign creative, signage, merchandise, and more.
It was also the basis for the Clubhouse design, which featured a a practice putting green in the shape of the ‘S’, a bar, merchandise and feminist library.
Hype Reel
As the exhibition was still in development, and all artworks were new commissions, we did not have any existing assets we could use for video that would effectively communicate the exhibition.
For the early announcement of Swingers in February 2025, I led the creative direction and production of a hype reel, shot and edited by Silky Jazz. It needed to land location (Flinders Street Station), and mini golf but ‘not as you know it’. We achieved this by making the ball behave in a surreal manner, as if it had a life of its own (bouncing up stairs, taking the lift), and leant on the recognition of the artists’ names to communicate the ‘art’ aspect.
The song ‘Sweet & Savage’ by Moonchild Sanelly tied into the broader RISING program, which featured artists from Nyege Nyege Collective. Through its festival, Nyege Nyege promotes African underground music.
We updated the trailer several times across the campaign, including twice with new footage from install, and then exhibition opening.
Merchandise
At RISING, I oversee our merchandise production and retail. For Swingers, we produced a few limited-edition items and artist collaborations. We collaborated with US conceptual artist and filmmaker Miranda July on a set of baseball-style pennant flags and a jumper. Both sets of items featured handwritten ‘fortunes’ by Miranda July, that matched the fortunes that formed part of her mini golf hole, and the end of the exhibition.
We also worked with local chocolate makers Lizzie’s Chocolates on some mini golf chocolates.
